Oscar Dene Tyndall, 81, peacefully passed away at his home on March 12, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on July 26, 1943, Dene was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Brenda Howard Tyndall; his parents, Oscar “Sugar Bag” and Sudie Tyndall; his brothers, Jack Tyndall and Billy Tyndall; and his sister, Ida Pearl Moore.
Dene was employed with the Lenoir County Public School System, where he worked for 25 years in the Maintenance Department retiring as the Grounds Foreman. He was also a dedicated firefighter for Deep Run Volunteer Fire Department for most of his adult life selflessly serving and protecting his community. He was a dedicated member of Christian Chapel Church and Pleasant Hill Masonic Lodge No. 304, where he formed meaningful relationships that enriched his life and the lives of others. Prior to his career with LCPS, he worked for Humphrey-Hardison Oil Company in Deep Run.
After his retirement Dene was most often found mowing grass and doing yard work at his home as well as other homes in the neighborhood. In his downtime, Dene could often be found watching the RFD Channel, where he cherished the variety of programming that aligned with his love for country, gospel and Bluegrass music along with rural traditions. With a Servant’s heart, Dene always enjoyed helping others and will be dearly missed by his family and community.
He is survived by his son, Darryl Tyndall and wife, Lori, his daughters, Deanna Tyndall Smith and Karen Tyndall Kennedy and husband, Doug and his son-in-law, Frank Smith. He was a proud grandfather to Rhiley Kennedy Marshburn (Brandon), Briana Jamison Stillwell (Matthew), Molly Kennedy-Maultsby (Evan), Owen Dene Tyndall and Emma Raye Tyndall. He was blessed with three great-grandchildren, Henry and Alison Stillwell and Kennedy Marshburn. He is also survived by brothers Bobby Tyndall and Dennis Tyndall and his brother-in-law Butch Howard and wife, Wanda along with several special nieces, nephews and special family friend, Jessica Baker.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Gentiva Home Care & Hospice, as well as his caregivers, especially Jeffrey “Cotton” Howard, for their unwavering support and compassionate care during his final days.
A service to celebrate Dene’s life will be held at Pink Hill Funeral Home on Sunday, March 16, 2025. Visitation will be from 3:00 - 4:00 PM. The funeral service will begin at 4:00 PM followed by a graveside service with Masonic Rites at Oak Ridge Memorial Park in Pink Hill.
