Matthew Smith Obituary

Matthew Dylon Smith

Pink Hill

Matthew Dylon Smith, 21, passed away on Friday, June 28, 2019 at his home.

Matthew graduated from East Duplin High School where he was best known as #60 on the football field and assisted/led his team to many victories.  As a member of Boy Scout Troop 244, Matthew learned many leadership skills and earned the rank of Eagle Scout.  During high school, he worked at Food Lion in Pink Hill where he was loved by all, employees and patrons alike. His gracious attitude to everyone along with his sweet spirit, fun loving nature and engaging smile earned him many friends.  As a hardworking and well-loved employee of Barnhill, Inc. he was respected for his willingness to work hard, learn new concepts of road construction and assist in teaching others.

Matthew was an avid hunter and fisherman and will always be remembered for the pictures he posted of relaxing days on the river in his boat with family and friends, especially Jackson, who along with his parents were his favorite fishing buddies.  He also won many trophies with his Treeing Walkers at "coon hunting" events over the years and was considered to be a Champ.  His mechanical skills made him the go-to person for many of his friends and family members.  He could often been found leaning over a 4-wheeler with his hands deep inside repairing what others considered a piece of junk.

Matthew was preceded in death by his grandmother, Patsy Carter, grandfathers, Willie Jacobs and Norman Kinnett and great-grandmothers, Retha Casteen and Iris Howard.

He is survived by his parents, Christopher Lee and Cindy Carter Smith of Pink Hill; sister, Jessica Carter Smith and husband Christopher J. Smith Jr. and nephews Jackson Carter and Eli Smith; grandparents,  Carolyn Moore and Timothy (Phrog) Tyndall,  and best  friend, Derek Wallace.  He is also survived by 14 other loving aunts and uncles, and numerous cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2019 at Pink Hill Funeral Home.  Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at Pink Hill Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park in Pink Hill.

Matthew was a shining jewel and will be missed by all.
