Mary “Frances” Hill Stroud
Deep Run
On November 26, 2022, Mary “Frances” Hill Stroud, beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and Nana fell asleep at the age of 92. She was the oldest child of Samuel James and Mary Maxwell Johnston Hill. She had four siblings whom she adored: Clara “Catherine” (deceased), Samuel James II “Sammie”, Joseph Michael “Mike”, and “Nancy” Louise (deceased).
Frances married Preston Stroud and had four children: Lee (Susan), Carolyn (Billy), Susan (Daryl) and James Stroud. Grandchildren followed: Robbie, Christy and Toni King and Patrick Mills, Clay Layden, Kerri Leland as well as 8 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Frances moved into the family homeplace and lovingly tended it after the passing of her husband and parents. She was a keeper of family history, and often recalled an idyllic childhood filled with extended family at the homeplace. She grew up alongside both sets of her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and siblings. Her family was her greatest treasure. Family memories and memorabilia were dear to her, and she fulfilled her dream by tending the family homeplace, where she accumulated troves of records, relics, and photographs from many eras. She followed family lineage back to Scottish and Irish clans and traced many branches of the family tree, often sharing photos or tales of the intertwining branches in the small community of Deep Run.
Frances never lived outside of her hometown and gave back to the community through her volunteer efforts with Woodmen of the World and Red Cross Blood Drives. Her diminutive stature fit her youthful persona; she was ever an energetic girl at heart. She enjoyed staying busy, and always had projects in the works or in mind. She enjoyed tending her yard and home, as well as being active in church. She also found joy in cooking and hosting her loved ones for many delicious meals around her table. Nothing blessed her more than having the company of family.
A special thanks to Pam King for her love and compassion, Community Home Care & Hospice, and the staff of Rose Vista.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 1, 2022 at Oak Ridge Memorial Park in Pink Hill.
