Joan Smith Outlaw, 80, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2024 at ECU Health in Greenville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Phil Outlaw; parents, Mildred Chase and Hugh Smiith; grandmother, Tirzah Sheppard; brothers, Mike Smith, Hugh Smith Jr., Beverly Ivey Smith, and Wendall Outlaw and sister-in-law, Pat Outlaw.
Joan loved flowers, serving and cooking. She enjoyed Christmas from October through December! Joan was a member of the Lenoir County Jaycettes and the Fair Association; she was owner of Express Tax and Director of Foster Grandparents at Caswell Center. She was affectionally known as “Mama Joan” to the youth at church and to her daughters’ friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at Pink Hill Funeral Home. Visitation will follow the service.
Joan is survived by her daughters, Celeste Fussell and Phyliss Outlaw; brother, Terry Dean Smith and sister, June Ann Tart. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, John-Mark Fussell (Ali), Garrett Fussell (Sydney), Sloane Fussell and Paxtton Outlaw; great grandchildren, Ariel Fussell, Luna Fussell, Cannon Fussell and Willow Fussell; several in-laws and many nieces and nephews and caregiver, Karen Canada.
In.lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
