Joan was a graduate of East Duplin High School, Class of 1965. She married her sweetheart,
Russell, in the Salt Lake City Temple, in Salt Lake City, Utah, on February 6, 1968. Together
they raised seven children and taught them to live the gospel of Jesus Christ. They also taught
them to be patriots, to love and honor this wonderful country, the American flag, and to be
100%, true blue, Carolina Tarheel fans. In their later years, they enjoyed being called to serve
together in the Raleigh Temple.
Joan was a devoted wife and mother, and was known to become feisty if needed to protect her
family. She loved her children, but loved her grandchildren even more, and took advantage of
any opportunity to love and support them. Her grandchildren affectionately called her G-Money,
and they loved to spend time with her too.
