Hilda LaRue Jones Howard, 88, passed away on December 30, 2020. She was born on July 16, 1932.  Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, Thad Murphy Jones and mother Ardolia Estelle Houston Jones, and her husband, Edward William Howard. Her surviving family includes her two brothers, James Davis Jones and wife Betty Jo and Dean Jones; her children, John Clifton Davis and wife, Jenice, Colleen Kay Davis Tyndall and husband Louis, Cheryl Davis Walker and husband Jim,  Barbara Davis Grady, Jeff Howard and wife, Lynn; her grandchildren, John Ashley Davis and wife Barbara, Tracey Davis Creech and husband, Cole, Amy Tyndall Deaver and husband Patrick, Ivy Tyndall Newbold, Mark Louis Tyndall and wife, Michelle, Joel Tyndall and wife Janna, Ashley Walker Anderson and husband Noel, James Derl Walker and wife Kaitlyn, Jessica Walker Kennett and husband Daniel, Sarah Katherine Walker, Larry Christopher Taylor and Jason Earl Taylor; Blake Howard and wife, Casidy, Catelyn Davis and husband Dusty, Tori Howard and Brett Howard. Her great grandchildren Emily Davis, Ashton Davis, John Cole Creech, Emma Deaver, William Deaver, Julia Deaver, Ashton Deaver, Colleen Newbold, Bryant Newbold, Davis Newbold, Mason Tyndall, Molly Tyndall, Charles Anderson IV, Walker Anderson, Crew Anderson, Sadie Anderson, Poppy Kennett, Christopher Taylor, Jason “JT” Taylor, Madelyn Howard, Colton Davis, Alana Davis, Ariella Davis, Addisyn Davis, and Avari Davis. Her great-great grandchildren, Christopher Taylor, Melody Belle Taylor, Rowan Taylor, and Blake Vaughan. 

Hilda was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and attended the Woodington Ward.  She loved the Lord and testified of the Gospel both in word and deed. Hilda was an avid reader and was often found reading her scriptures that she kept on the table by her chair. She served as a Relief Society President along with many other positions throughout her life. Hilda retired from Caswell Center where she loved working with and serving the residents. She was an extremely talented woman and her hands were rarely still. She made beautiful quilts, flower arrangements, dolls, curtains and clothing. She loved antiques and refinished furniture.  She was skilled in caning chairs. She had many hobbies such as painting, cross stitching, and ceramics. Her home was as beautiful outside as it was inside as she enjoyed landscaping her yard and flower garden.  Hilda was a great cook and will be especially remembered for her delicious biscuits. Her true passion was family history and genealogy. She spent many hours researching her family tree, traveling to courthouses for documents and visiting cemeteries for dates to ensure she had accurate information.  

The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Harmony Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kinston, NC for taking such wonderful care of our beloved mother and grandmother over the past year.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 2, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Woodington Ward, 6655 Hwy 258 S. Deep Run, NC 28525 with Bishop Johnny Smith officiating. All attending age 5 and older must wear a mask per Governor’s Executive Order. Due to Covid restrictions, there will not be a visitation.
