Clara Barwick Obituary

Clara Stroud Barwick

Deep Run

Clara Stroud Barwick, 87.75 years old died April 4, 2022 at home with her daughter by her side. She was born July 15, 1934 to Burrell & Claudia Stroud in Lenoir County Deep Run, NC. Clara was a collector of many things to include pigs, butterflies, salt & pepper shakers, pocket books, and shoes. She had special friends’ groups -The Golden Girls from High School who  includes her childhood friend Claudine Kennedy; the Order of the Eastern Star “Sisters and Brothers;” Her best friend Isabel Harper with whom she took many excursions; The Hand and Foot Card Sharks that would play until 1am on Friday nights; the Dobbs School Staff Family; The Southern Pharmacy Services Family; Her Church family at Deep Run FWB Church, the Church on the Hill; and the Albertson Ward Church Family.

Her pride and joy were those that called her “Grandma Barwick,” “Mema,” and “GiGi.” She adored her family, loved to cook large Sunday lunches for all to gather and celebrated every holiday with food and family.

She, with her family, owned and operated the B&S Café and traveled from Florida to New Jersey and Ohio catering pig pickins. The highlight of her love of the kitchen was the filming in her kitchen teaching Vivian Howard how to make apple jacks. You can watch this on the PBS show “The Chef’s Life” series 1 as well as the “Ambrosia Episode.” Vivian stated “I learned from Clara Muriel Barwick how to make apple jacks which have been an obsession of mine since I was a kid eating apple jacks every Saturday from the B&S Café” as was written in the Garden & Gun magazine October 16, 2018 where she highlighted Clara once again as one of her five favorite filming’s.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Eddie, daughter Claudette, brother Kenneth, and the father of her children Alex Barwick.

Survivors include daughter Dr. Alexis Welch, sons by choice, Sonny Croom (Pat) and Darrell Griffin (Susan); grandchildren Kim Jones (Dennis), Larry Welch II (Hannah), Sarah Harper, and Jason Welch; great grandchildren Austin Jones (Santana), Shelby Jones, Dakota Welch, Adriana, Walt, Abram, and Ellie Harper, Savana Jones; grandson-in law Bret Harper; sister-in law Sherri Stroud; nieces Saborah, Terrie and Dori.

She was blessed with the best caregivers Brenda Jones, Pearlie Davis, Armatha Davis, and Kim Langston who loved her dearly and she loved them. She affectionately called Brenda her “pissant.

The visitation will be 11-12:45p followed by the funeral from 1-2p at the Church of Jesus Christ, 3554 N HWY 111-903, Albertson NC on Friday April 8, 2022. The burial will be at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston NC.

She was ready to see Eddie and her parents and begged the Lord to take her home. Alas, she has met the Lord.
