Carl Kennedy Obituary

Carl Franklin Kennedy

Carl Franklin Kennedy of Deep Run passed away on Friday, July 1, 2022 at Kitty Askins Hospice in Goldsboro.  He was born September 10, 1943 on the family farm in Lenoir County to Carl and Janie Barwick Kennedy.  He graduated from Pink Hill High School.  After graduation he was employed at Humphrey-Hardison Oil Company in Deep Run.  He then spent four years in the United States Air Force.  Following his military service, he had a long career with the US Postal Service from which he retired.

Carl was quiet, shy unassuming man.  But he was well-read and had a steel-trap memory for facts and figures.  He loved baseball and he attended games in Kinston through all the team’s name changes.  Whether they were Eagles, Indians, or Wood Ducks, he was in the stands until his health failed.  He could quote you baseball statistics for major league teams as well as for local teams.  Carl enjoyed movies and kept up with all the latest films, but he was a true fan of old westerns, especially Gunsmoke.  He was a collector of many things: Civil War memorabilia, James Bond movies and related collectibles, and books on a variety of subjects.  He was well-read and was a savant about subjects which interested him, and he had a wealth of knowledge and little-known details about those subjects.  And about those subjects he was very conversant.

He was a life-long member of Deep Run Original Free Will Baptist Church.  He unobtrusively showed his faithfulness and dedication in that he was always on hand to unlock and lock the church buildings for all services on Sunday mornings as long as he was able.  He especially enjoyed church fellowship meals where he was quietly observant but always ready with a pertinent fact.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Carol Jean Kennedy. He is survived by numerous cousins and his special caregivers, Melvin and Saborah Hill Smith.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston.

A special thank-you to the caregivers at Kitty Askins for the wonderful care given to Carl
